Disappointing Ending to 2013 Season

Mother Nature refused to co-operate with our desire to row this weekend. The officials of the CSSRA Regatta cancelled the rest of the races at 2 pm Sunday due to high wind conditions that were predicted only to get worse.

This is a real heartbreak to the Bulldog team who had 5 crews in the finals that were posed to get on the podium. Four of our crews;  the Sr Men’s Quad, the Sr Women’s 8 , the Sr Men’s Single and the Jr Men’s 66 kg 4+ all missed out on a bronze medal by less than 1/2 a second in overall times. To work so hard all year and to not get a chance to have that final race is a huge disappointment for these dedicated athletes and their coaches. We feel your pain – truly.

The officials did not make this decision lightly and as always, put athlete safety first.

We are hoping that when the frustration and sadness of this day passes, we might find an evening to bring the team back together for a BBQ. We are looking for a family with a big back yard willing to host this event. Marc Blouin is ready to open up (his) wallet to make this happen. If you are open to discussing having a gathering at your home please call Martha at the school 905-684-6349 ext 64823.

As well, I have a camera that belongs to a parent from the Jr Girl’s quad and may also have a connection to Maywood. I will bring it to school tomorrow.

Thank you to parents who got up early, drove and car-pooled, listened and supported. Thank you to those who helped at the Bulldog Tent this past weekend and over the season.

Hats off to all our athletes who demonstrated determination, perseverance and self-discipline in pursuing their goals through the long rowing season. We will be back. And for those graduating, here’s to hoping that you continue to row club or school. It remains a great sport.

Saturday Night

Congratulations to all crews who rowed today – extreme wind this morning, a huge squall this evening but eventually races got run. It is so exciting to have SO MANY SWC boats in tomorrow’s finals. I can think of 6 events that we will have entries in: Sr W 8, Sr W 4x, Sr W 4+. Jr M 72kg 2x, Sr M 4x, Sr M 1x … that is with the final results not yet posted (at the time of writing this).

The island or the Grandstand will be the place to be tomorrow. Wear blue and gold (buy a SWC crew shirt!) and come cheer on the Bulldogs. It is going to be a great day! Congratulations to all athletes and their coaches who made it through to tomorrow’s finals!

Hoping first heat o Jr M 4x goes at 4:15.

Saturday Racing Postponed

Most of you will know by now that today’s racing has been postponed due to wind conditions. Please make sure your athlete stays in contact with their coach as the call up to start again can be anytime – although they are saying probably not until 4 pm. All heats will go as soon as the course is safe and racing will continue until dusk. If all the semi’s are not run today, they will start up again at 6:30 am Sunday. Sunday’s schedule will NOT be effected by what happens today.

CSSRA Friday May 31

Congratulations to all our SWC athletes who rowed in their heats today in hot and windy conditions. We had 7 crews advance to the semi’s tomorrow, which is a fantastic result! The Junior Women 4+ gave it their best shot but did not qualify in a tough field. The Senior Women’s 2x missed advancing by a very narrow margin. Everyone else earned a good enough time to move on. We had two crews win their heats; the Senior men’s 2x and the Senior Women’s 8+. This was a fantastic showing today Bulldogs. We are a strong and deep team this year. Tomorrow will be exciting!
