Coach News

Congratulations to Meredith Petrachenyko (Jr Boys) who just landed an Long Term Contract in the DSBN. Her new school is lucky to have her. Unfortunately, her new school is in Grimsby, which makes it impossible for her to continue coaching in our program. We are actively looking for – and needing – a replacement. In the meantime, Ms Hunt will be helping Troy Wallace with winter training for the junior boys.

Some Notes from Last Night’s Meeting

Thank you to all the parents who came out for our meeting last night. I think I will have to get a bigger room next time! Wonderful to see the support from everyone there. I hope you found it to be a valuable use of your time.

Fund Raising – lots of chat about this last night and the comments were appreciated. One concern was that this year’s selection, which we have simplified for everyone’s benefit, does not have any “less-expensive” items, which might making asking friends and family more difficult. Thank you for that comment. All I can say is that we will see how it goes this year. If we want an order form with more choices next year, we can go back to that.

If you prefer to simply write a cheque as your fund-raising contribution, I won’t turn down your money! My preference is for the students to work towards supporting their rowing program themselves, but I do understand how overly-crazy-busy lives are. Please do what works best for your family.

$100 and over of fundraising will reduce your club fees by $25.

Thank you to those who bought shirts and grocery cards last night. More of both can be obtained through Ms. Hunt at school.

Thank you in advance for your efforts in raising funds for our rowing program 2013-14.

Parent Meeting

A reminder of the parent meeting Wednesday Nov 20 at 5:30 pm in the Guidance area of the school. As well as the coaches, we will also hear from the person heading up our citrus fundraiser AND there will be grocery cards for sale. Looking forward to seeing you all here!

Jr. Girls

If any of you have time after school today(monday) Jim Finley has offered to do some technique work on the ergs in the cage. This help will improve your erg scores and help you make a boat. We have a lot of girls to try and fit into boats this year.

Fri Nov 15: Reminders

It was great to be at the island this morning watching Eric and Dave show the junior girls around the site and teaching them about moving the shells from the bay to the water. Also fun to see some of these girls take their very first strokes with the oar while dockside!

Coaches having busy booking tank time at Brock for our athletes. This is extremely valuable training and we are lucky to have use of this facility. Cost for using the tank comes from the athlete (parents), so please get further information about this from the coaches.

A reminder of the Dec 6 deadline for our citrus fundraiser. We have the potential to raise a significant amount of money if we all work together – just like a rowing crew! Coaches have requested that we use this fundraiser to purchase new ergometers for dryland training, an essential component of our program. Thank you in advance for your help with this. An order of 10 full boxes will bring $100 to our program. Anyone achieving this goal will have $25 taken off their club fees in the spring.

Finally, a reminder of the Parent meeting this Wednesday, Nov 20 here at SWC. Please come to the Guidance area for a 5:30 start, and hopefully we are out by 6 pm.

Updates from St Catharines Rowing Club

A note to new parents and an update for the vets; before our students can get on the water in the spring, they must be members of the SCRC (St Catharines Rowing Club). I will be collecting the fee for this membership once your child has earned their place in a boat. Last year registration was done through their website – the club is saying that this process may change for 2014. They are also warning that there may be a significant increase in fees as well. I do not know what this means but thought you should know. I will keep you informed on both of these items when I learn more.

SCRC has also published a list of key dates for 2014. This schedule is tentative and subject to change at this early date, but it will give you some ideas of what to expect in the spring. Please note that SWC does not travel to all of these events. Please be in contact with your child’s coach concerning their plans as the year progresses.
